Congratulations – you got the job! Now you’ve got to make a good first impression on your team, and prove to them that you’re up to it!
Starting a new job is exciting, but it can also be stressful. Particularly if it’s your first job, or in a different industry to your previous role.
What if you don’t fit in, or your new teammates aren’t nice? What if you make a big mistake in your first week? Will the onboarding be virtual? How will that work?!
All of these are natural concerns when you’re jumping into something new and unknown.
My New Job
No matter our age or experience, starting a new chapter in your career is a daunting prospect for anyone! But remember that you were chosen for the role because the hiring manager saw the necessary skills and attitudes in you.
That’s what I kept telling myself when I started at Mind Tools.
Going from a part-time role in retail as a student to a full-time position in Content was a big jump for my career, so at times I doubted myself and even felt like a fraud. I didn’t have anywhere near as much experience as my colleagues.
But, with my manager’s guidance and my team’s full support, I was able to learn on the job and expand my skillset. As my expertise grew, so did my confidence.
Ask Questions!
My advice to any new starter is to ask questions. No one is going to laugh at you if you don’t know something, and questioning things is a brilliant way to start discussions and bring about positive change.
Sometimes you might feel scared or too embarrassed to ask for help, but reaching out shows that you’re committed to getting the best results possible. Plus, it’ll help strengthen relationships with your co-workers.
The more you ask today, the better equipped you’ll be tomorrow.
